By the grace of God, I willingly accept a commitment to abstain from the pleasures and pursuits of this world in order to seek the Lord whole heartedly for a period of one year. I purpose to join with other believers to, "Seek the things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father" by "Setting [my] mind on the things above, not on the things that are on the earth."
FORSAKING THE THINGS OF THE FLESH
"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows that he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life." I desire to stop sowing to the flesh which endangers my soul and therefore commit to forsaking TV, worldly entertainment, deadening secular input of all sorts, video games, unnecessary and ungodly computer input, drugs, alcohol, and all fleshly indulgence. I use for my guide the words of Psalm 101;
"I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart. I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not fasten it's grip on me."
SOWING TO THE SPIRIT
It is my intent to use this time to earnestly seek God. I commit to a program of regular Bible reading and private prayer. I desire to enter into close communion with the Living God that I might begin to see the fruit of the Spirit manifested in my life. I commit to listening only to edifying music and enjoying uplifting entertainment. I use the words of Jesus in John 15 as a guide; "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing." I desire to become a fruitful worker for the Kingdom of God and I am willing to pay the price of staying attached to the Vine Himself. It is the greatest joy and truest satisfaction to embrace the cross of Christ in order to follow in His footsteps.
GREATER LOVE HAS NO MAN
"If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish and it shall be done for you. By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples." I take as my inspiration the commitment Jeremiah lived by which was to make it a point to speak to at least one person each day about the love of God. In this commitment I am able to truly enter the fellowship of the unashamed.
I realize that I am in no way entering a relationship with God based on my works, but I desire to obey His word, "If by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body you will live." and "Do not be conformed to the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." and "Abstaining from worldly lusts which wage war against your soul." I openly confess that I have no power in myself to adhere to this commitment, but look to the sustaining power of God and His grace alone to pursue this course. To God alone be the power and glory.
